Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

I know, it's a bit of a typical one to start off with.

'Pride and Prejudice' is one that many of you will have had to study at school and so a lot of people decide that this puts them off it. I have recently studied it in a class, but had previously read the book in my own time, so have really seen what the book is like.

So for those of you who somehow do not know what the story is like...

It is basically a love story set in the 1800's. A novel of two 'should not be together' people, ending up together.

I often find that books written far in the past have very developed and deep storylines. 'Pride and Prejudice' didn't change my mind about this. To be honest I was expecting to get bored very soon into the book, however the beginning grabbed me quite quickly. At first the way it is written is hard to get around, but it's easy to generally get the jist of what is happening. It's a typical romantic book written in that era. So if you enjoy romance books then give it a go, (although I mean 'Jane Eyre' kind of romance over 'Twilight'!).

I guess I don't have too much to say about this one, the overly eccentric Mrs. Bennett made me laugh but there's not too much excitement. It still has the more thought-out storyline that a lot of older books have, but misses out on the excitment that many of them try to include. That is why I say this is definately for the lover of romance books. Although... my Mum seems to love 'Pride and Prejudice', assumingly as she has seen the film, (Colin Firth is one of her favs!).

So overall? It didn't change my life. I didn't spend the next few weeks wishing that Jane Austen had written a sequel. But DON'T decide against reading it because of the length, or the language, or the opinions other people give you. Although at times it was a bit of an effort to get through, I'm glad that I've read it. It took me a while to read, but I managed it and in the end it turned out to be not bad. I enjoyed the way your opinion of the characters switches throughout the book, but it's not going to reach my top ten books or anything. I think that it's just one of those books which people will always have different opinions about. Give it a go, after all it is a classic so if only to say that you have read it, you might find that you really enjoy it.

Till next time :)
